Shell app broken in Firefox v148

We’re aware of an issue with the shell application impacting Firefox users on the new version of Firefox - v148.

This issue renders the shell application unusable on this version of Firefox. A quick test shows this impacts OnDemand version 4.0, 4.1 and possibly older versions as well.

We’re working on patching this for at least version 4.1. In the interim users should use another web browser or downgrade to Firefox 147 to workaround the issue.

Jeff,

Does it result in a blank white page in Firefox?

Hi, Pete – At our center, yes, a blank white field. There is a slim ‘header’ that announces the ‘Host’ and a ‘Themes’ drop down in my current view. So with FF 148, I can verify the compromised performance.

I appreciate the note so quickly, Jeff – I had been puzzling over this for only an hour when you sent the announcement.

Cheers

Yes, Pete. We are seeing a blank white page as a result.

We have a pull request started for a patch to fix this.

ood v4.1.1
Firefox, 148.0 (aarch64), same issue as @emily.dragowsky reported.

But works fine with Safari and Chrome.

Same issue here with Firefox 148.0 (2026-02-24) and OOD 4.0.1.

Also affects 2.0.32 (yes, an OOD upgrade is on our todo list).

GitHub issue opened here (kudos to @simonleary-umass-edu) with linked PR: shell app WSoD on firefox 148 · Issue #5101 · OSC/ondemand · GitHub

Is there an estimate when a new release will be dropped that will include this fixed?

Thanks!

Until whatever new releases happen (and I’m not holding my breath for a new 2.0 release, but I’m willing to be pleasantly surprised), the changes shown in [1] are really simple to implement. I didn’t wait around, and it went fine for us.

I manually implemented the fix in 4.0.8 and 4.1.1 and both went well, fixing the issue. Very easy change.

Hi @mick-t. We are planning on releasing the patch tomorrow, and no later than Thursday. It has been undergoing manual testing, but it will not have completed our usual one-week testing window on OSC systems prior to release.

Hi all - the patches addressing this issue are now available in Open OnDemand versions 4.1.4 and 4.0.10.

Versions 4.1.3 and 4.0.9 were also released today to address a separate CVE, but they do not include the Firefox fix.

Thanks for your patience while we worked to get a fix out as quickly as possible! Please see the release announcements for more details.

v4.1.4-1 implemented at CWRU.

Bug fix for FF verified on RHEL9 server.

Thanks for the quick action!!

I can confirm that too. Version 4.0.6 FF 148 on KDE Neon / Ubuntu 24.04.

Waterfox, the AI-free fork works perfectly, though.
